How to Choose Art with Your Heart

Have you ever looked at a work of art and felt something immediately? Not necessarily understood why. You simply pause.
Maybe it’s the colours. Maybe it’s the light. Maybe something in the expression reminds you of a place, a person or a feeling. Or perhaps you can’t quite put your finger on what it is at all.
You just know:
I love this.
That’s often how a meaningful connection with art begins.
You Don’t Need to Know Anything About Art
Many people find it difficult to choose art.
What will look good in my home?
Which colours should I choose?
What size is right?
Will I get tired of looking at it?
What if I make the wrong choice?
These are all perfectly natural questions. But perhaps we’re approaching it from the wrong direction.
Because choosing art doesn’t have to be about what fits in. It can be about what speaks to you.
You don’t need to know art history. You don’t need to know what’s considered “right”. You don’t need to explain why you like a particular painting.
You’re allowed to simply like it.
And that is enough.

Choose Something That Means Something to You
Choose something that feels meaningful to you.
Perhaps it reminds you of something. A period in your life. A person. A place you’ve been. A dream you have. Something you’ve overcome. Or perhaps simply a feeling you enjoy having around you.
It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes it’s simply a painting that makes you happy every time you look at it. Other times, a painting can touch something deeper.
That’s when art becomes personal.
Choose with Your Heart

Of course, size, colours and placement matter. A painting needs to work in the space where it will hang.
But perhaps the very first question should still be:
How do I feel when I look at this?
Do I want to keep looking?
Does it make me feel calm?
Does it give me energy?
Does it awaken something in me?
Does it remind me of someone?
Or is it simply difficult to look away?
That last question might be more important than you think.
Because there’s a difference between thinking:
“This would look perfect with my sofa.”
And thinking:
“I love looking at this.”
I know which one I would choose.
Art Doesn’t Have to Match Your Home. It Can Help Make It Yours.
I believe our homes should tell a story about who we are. About the things we love. The places we’ve been. The people who matter to us. The dreams we have. And the things we want to surround ourselves with.
That’s why art doesn’t have to be the last thing you choose, just to make everything “come together”.
It can be the very thing that sets the mood in a room.
A painting can bring calm to a room full of activity. It can add colour to an otherwise neutral home. It can be bold and expressive. Or quiet and almost a little mysterious.
The most important thing is that it feels like you.

And Then There’s Another Side to This
Sometimes, we choose art based on who we think we should be.
We look at trends. At pictures of beautiful homes. At what other people have on their walls.
But perhaps you actually love something completely different?
Perhaps you’re drawn to bold colours, even though the rest of your home is calm and neutral. Perhaps you love a dark and dramatic painting. Or maybe you’re most attracted to something simple and light.
Choose what you love.
Not what you think other people will love.
When You Find the Right One
I don’t think you always have to think your way towards the right painting.
Sometimes, you just feel it.
You come back to it. Look at it again. And again. Perhaps you close the website, but find yourself thinking about it later.
That might be worth paying attention to.
Art is one of the few things we buy that can continue to give us something long after the purchase has been made.
And perhaps that’s exactly why it’s worth choosing with your heart.
Not because the heart is always right.
But because something you live with every day should mean something to you.

So, How Do You Choose Art with Your Heart?
Look. What draws your eye?
Pause. Which artwork makes you want to stay a little longer?
Feel. What does it bring up in you?
Think less about what “fits” and more about what feels right.
And finally:
Choose the one you can’t stop thinking about.
Because perhaps it’s not the artwork that needs to fit into your home.
Perhaps your home is the place that should make room for something that feels like you. 🤍
