5 simple tips that make a big difference

Art is often what gives a room its personality. Yet many people find it difficult to choose the right piece. What size works best? Which colours go well together? And should you choose one large artwork or several smaller ones? Here are five simple tips to help you find art that suits both your home and your personal style.

1. Think about the atmosphere you want to create

Before you start looking at different artworks, take a moment to consider how you want the room to feel.

Would you like a calm and peaceful space? Then artworks with soft shapes and muted colours may be a good choice. If you want more energy and vibrancy, stronger contrasts and a greater sense of movement can work beautifully.

Art often influences the atmosphere of a room more than we realise.

2. Go larger than you initially think

This is probably the advice I give most often.

Many people choose artwork that is slightly too small for the wall where it will hang. As a result, the piece can get lost and fail to create the impact they were hoping for.

If you have a larger wall, a larger art print will often create a more balanced and harmonious look. You can also hang two large artworks side by side to make the most of the space.

3. Take inspiration from the colours already in the room

Art does not need to match your interior perfectly, but it can be helpful to pick up some of the colours that already exist in the space.

Blue tones can create a sense of calm and depth. Warmer tones can bring energy and warmth. Repeating certain colours in both your artwork and your interior often creates a natural sense of harmony throughout the room.

4. One large artwork or a gallery wall?

There is no right or wrong answer.

A larger artwork can act as a natural focal point and help bring a room together. Several smaller pieces can create a more personal and dynamic expression.

If you are unsure, one larger artwork is often the simplest solution.

5. Choose art you want to look at every day

Trends come and go, but the art on your walls is something you will live with for years.

That is why the most important advice may be this: choose something that makes you feel good. Something that brings you joy every time you see it. Art that means something to you will often work far better than art chosen simply because it happens to be fashionable right now.
