How big should a picture be on the wall? A simple guide to the right size

This is probably the question I get asked most often: “What size should I choose?”

Many people are afraid of choosing a piece that will feel too large. In reality, the opposite is often the case. Most people end up choosing artwork that is a little too small for the space.

Here are a few simple tips to help you find the right size for your wall and your home. 💙

COMMON MISTAKE: The image is too small.

The picture is too small

A piece of art doesn't necessarily have to fill the entire wall, but it should be large enough to get the attention it deserves.

A small picture on a large wall can quickly look lonely and disappear into the room.

Therefore, it is often wise to choose a little larger than you first think.

GREAT CHOICE: Small sizes work well on shelves, smaller walls or as part of a picture wall.

When is a small size appropriate?

A smaller art print works well:

  • On shelves

  • On a chest of drawers or sideboard

  • On smaller walls or a limited part of a larger wall

  • As part of a picture wall

A 25 x 25 cm art print can be a good choice if you want a discreet touch of art or want to combine several images together.

SAFE CHOICE: Medium-sized art prints are large enough to be seen without dominating the room.

When is a medium size suitable?

A medium size is often the safest solution.

A 40 x 40 cm art print is suitable:

  • Together with several photos

  • On smaller walls or smaller rooms

This size is large enough to be visible, without dominating the room.

EYE-CATCHING: Large formats create more calm and balance on larger walls.

When should you choose a larger picture?

If you have a larger wall, a larger art print can create more peace and balance in the room.

A 60 x 60 cm art print works well:

  • Above a sofa

  • On larger walls

  • Where you want a clear eye-catcher

A larger picture can often bring the room together in a way that several small pictures cannot.

GALLERY WALL: Mix and match different sizes and formats for a beautiful gallery wall.

One large picture or several small ones?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Some people prefer a larger piece of art that plays the main role in the room. Others like to combine several pictures on a picture wall.

If you are unsure, a larger picture is often the easiest choice.

My best advice

If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Many people find that art looks smaller on the wall than they had imagined. A slightly larger picture often gives more presence, more atmosphere and a more complete expression.

Not sure what suits you?

It can be difficult to imagine the size based on the measurements alone.
